- Taxes are based on your assessment, that is the key number and the only one the homeowner can try to change.
- Check your Market Value, make sure you believe that value is comparable to other similar homes. You can check those of your neighbors at using the Land Records Viewer for Nassau County. If you believe your value is too high, you can grieve your assessment, either yourself or through a grievance company.
- File for any exemptions to which you are entitled. Exemption Brochures, forms and FAQ’s can all be found on the Nassau County Assessor’s website. (Some of the exemptions include Home Improvements, Veterans, Senior Citizens, Firefighter/Ambulance Workers and Persons with Disabilities and Limited Income)
- Make sure you are signed up for the STAR exemption or credit. Everyone whose household income is under $500,000 will qualify for the credit. The exemptions which are in place are grandfathered in, all new STAR applications will be granted in the form of a credit via check or direct deposit. Click here for more information from the STAR Resource Center.
