Dear Rockville Centre Schools Community,
We are writing to make you aware of a recent cybersecurity incident involving PowerSchool, a software vendor, which provides our Student Information System (SIS).
On Tuesday, January 7, 2025, PowerSchool informed our leadership team that they experienced a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to certain PowerSchool SIS customer data. Unfortunately, they have confirmed that some of the information may belong to Rockville Centre Schools’ families and educators.
PowerSchool informed us that the impacted data primarily includes parent and student contact information with data elements such as name and address information. Unfortunately, the compromised data also includes some personally identifiable information (PII) such as alert information, for example, a food allergy alert. Importantly, the District does not store any student social security numbers (SSN) or financial information in the PowerSchool SIS, therefore this type of data was not impacted.
Please know that the District is committed to protecting and securing educational data. Our team has extensive training in data security and privacy, and our systems have many controls in place to protect your child’s educational records. Although this incident did not occur in the District, our team is working with a group of experts to review the incident and implement appropriate measures to protect against this type of vendor-related incident occurring in the future. More information and resources will be provided to you as it becomes available and we learn more from PowerSchool.
Please contact Scott Werner at dpo@rvcschools.org with any questions you may have regarding this incident and our response.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Sincerely,
Matt Gaven
